Most people approach blending intuitively — sniff, guess, mix. The results are usually adequate but rarely excellent. The note system from perfumery gives you a framework that produces reliably good blends, even as a beginner.
The Note System Explained
Top
1–2 hours
First impression. Volatile, sharp, bright. Examples: lemon, orange, peppermint, eucalyptus. Evaporate quickly — you smell them first but they fade fastest. Contribute to the initial character of a blend.
Middle
3–5 hours
The heart of the blend. Warm, rounded, complex. Examples: lavender, rosemary, tea tree, geranium. Last 3–5 hours — this is what you smell for most of the day. The largest proportion of a well-balanced blend.
Base
6–8 hours
Anchor and fixative. Deep, rich, earthy. Examples: black seed, vetiver, sandalwood, frankincense. Slow to evaporate — provide longevity and depth. Without base notes, a blend disappears quickly.
Standard Starting Ratio
30% top notes + 50% middle notes + 20% base notes
For a 10-drop blend: 3 drops top + 5 drops middle + 2 drops base

Can I blend any two essential oils together?
Most combinations are safe and complementary. However, a few pairings reduce efficacy — peppermint can overwhelm subtler scents, so use it sparingly in complex blends. Always add one oil at a time and smell between additions rather than mixing all at once.
How do I store homemade blends in India's heat?
Store in dark amber or cobalt glass bottles in a cool, dark location. Avoid bathroom shelves (humidity + heat). A drawer or cabinet away from the kitchen is ideal. Label with ingredients and the blending date.
Do I need a diffuser or can I use blends without one?
No diffuser required. For aromas: cotton tissue, personal inhaler tube, or a terracotta disc work well. For skin: roller bottles or dropper bottles. Diffusers give better room-wide aroma distribution but are not essential.
